Guide

Free wavetables

By Stuart Frederich-Smith · Published October 13, 2026

Good wavetables don't have to cost anything. Sound designers, synth makers and open-source projects share thousands of free wavetables and single-cycle waveforms, in the WAV format Serum and Vital read and in formats made for hardware like the Disting and the E352. This guide collects the best free collections we could find, with what each one holds, the format it comes in and the terms it's offered under.

Every link was checked on October 13, 2026. Free offers change, so check the page before you rely on one, and let us know if something has moved or you know a collection we've missed. If wavetables are new to you, How wavetables work explains frames and frame size, which matter when you load a table into a synth.

Single-cycle waveform collections

Single cycles are one waveform each. They're the raw material for wavetables: load several as the frames of a table, or use one as the seed for a Build sweep.

WaveStack can't read Vital's own table format, but Vital is a good place to play tables you make: export with the Vital target.

Free tools that make single cycles

  • Modbang Wave Gen: A free browser tool that generates single cycles and small wavetables, exported as WAV at 64 to 4096 samples per wave.
  • 4ms SphereEdit: 4ms's free tool for turning WAVs into spheres for the Spherical Wavetable Navigator. WaveStack's SWN export can also send a table straight into the module.

Using free tables in WaveStack

WaveStack opens WAV wavetables, Surge .wt files and single cycles, so most of the collections above load directly. Once a table is open you can play it, reshape it, and export it for any synth, which is handy when a pack was made for one instrument and you want it on another.

  • A tagged wavetable, such as a Serum-style WAV or a Surge .wt, opens straight away: click it in the library, press ⌘O, or drop it on the window.
  • An untagged table, such as a Disting or WaveEdit bank, opens the Sample dialog. Choose Wavetable WAV and set Frame size in file: 600 for Disting tables, 256 for WaveEdit banks.
  • A folder of single cycles becomes a table in two steps. Open one file and choose Single cycle to start a one-frame table, then select the rest in New › Wavetable file (or drop them on the window). They're added as frames after the selected frame, in name order, and resampled to the table's frame size.
  • Fill the gaps between a few hand-picked cycles: mark them as keyframes and let WaveStack morph the frames in between.

Then export with your synth's target, which writes the frame size, frame count and format it expects. See Importing for all the options.

A note on terms

Free to download isn't always the same as free to share. AKWF is public domain (CC0), Ocean Swift's Wavetable Designer license allows commercial use, and Surge's tables sit in a GPL-3.0 repository. Most of the other packs don't state terms. Using a table in your own music is what they're shared for, but before redistributing the files or building them into something you sell, read the author's terms or ask. Packs that ask for an email address add you to the maker's mailing list.

Questions

Are free wavetables safe to use in released music? +

Usually, but check each pack's terms. AKWF is released under CC0, so you can use it for anything, and Ocean Swift's Wavetable Designer license allows commercial use. Many free packs don't state terms at all. Using a table in your own track is generally what they're shared for; putting the files themselves into a product or a pack of your own needs the author's permission unless the license says otherwise.

What's the difference between a single cycle and a wavetable? +

A single cycle is one waveform. A wavetable is a series of them, called frames, that a synth moves through to change the tone. A folder of single cycles can become a wavetable by loading them as the frames of one table.

Will Serum wavetables work in Vital or Ableton? +

Mostly. Vital also uses 2048-sample frames, so Serum-style WAVs load as they are. Ableton's Wavetable reads 1024-sample frames, so a Serum table loads with each frame cut in two unless it's converted first. WaveStack's Export converts a table to each synth's format.

Why does a wavetable sound wrong after I load it? +

The synth is probably reading a different frame size from the one the table was made at, so it cuts each frame in the wrong place. Check what frame size the pack uses and what your synth expects. Our instrument pages list the rules for each synth and module.

Can I make my own wavetables for free? +

Yes. Single-cycle collections like AKWF are a good start, and WaveStack can turn recordings, single cycles and images into tables, build them by sweeping a setting across the frames, and export them for your synth.
